The car crashed down a 3 to 4 metre bank. Photo/George Novak

Two people have suffered serious injuries when the car they were in crashed down a bank on State Highway 2 near Aongatete.

A police spokeswoman said the crash happened near the intersection of SH2 and Walker Rd East and was reported about 2.10pm.

One of the two people in the car had managed to get out but the other was trapped, she said.

Fire and Emergency Northern Communications shift manager Craig Dally said firefighters had freed one person from the vehicle.

Both people suffered serious injuries.

They were being cared for by paramedics.

A photographer at the scene said the bank was 3 to 4 metres high.
