Tauranga residents will not have to travel to the Mount to see the fireworks display this New Year's Eve.
The city council will prepare two fireworks displays, one at the Mount and one in Tauranga.
Tauranga City Council event delivery manager, Katharyn Roxburgh said this decision was made so "people don't have
to battle the Mount Maunganui traffic purely to see the fireworks display".
The Mount  display will be lit at Moturiki Island.
The location of the Tauranga fireworks display must be kept confidential, to ensure public safety.
Ms Roxburgh said the best viewing places will be anywhere along the beach, Maxwell's Reserve or "anywhere down there," she said.
"People will also get a good view from Sulphur Point, The Strand and they should be able to see it from the railway bridge," she said.
She said other prime viewing locations were any high areas in Welcome Bay and Maungatapu, although people might get a "slightly diminished view".
In previous years, she said people had been able to see the fireworks display in Pyes Pa.
Tauranga City Council has spent close to $11,000 exclusively on both displays.
The cost of this year's fireworks display matches previous displays, however Ms Roxburgh said fireworks were more expensive this year than last.
This means slightly  fewer fireworks, however it  would still be a pretty good show, said Ms Roxburgh.
