Two people have been arrested following a police pursuit of a car through Te Puna this afternoon.

A police spokeswoman said the pursuit started when a vehicle alleged to have been stolen was seen heading south on State Highway 2 towards Tauranga just before 3pm.

The spokeswoman said police attempted to pull the car over in Whakamarama but the driver, who had one passenger in the car, allegedly fled.

Police allege the pair abandoned the vehicle in a rural area near Te Puna, before fleeing in a second vehicle.

Police laid road spikes on Minden Rd and the car ran over them before coming to a stop on SH2.

The woman has been charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle and failing to appear on a warrant.

The man has been charged with failing to stop, reckless driving, two counts of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, burglary and breaching bail.
