Will Oropi take one of Ironkidz' top trophies again in 2014?
Last year, Oropi School won a very special prize. It was the School Participation Trophy at the Ironkidz event in Taupo, after the school sent the largest contingent of aspiring young Ironmen and Ironwomen to the annual children's triathlonevent.
Ironkidz, which runs on the Taupo lakefront on part of the same course used by Ironman New Zealand competitors, is on again this Sunday and is open to all children and teenagers aged from 5 to 15 years.
Around 400 entrants are expected at the event and distances vary according to age group.
It is open to both individuals and teams. Younger entrants aged from 5 to 7 years can take part in a fun Splash and Dash event which consists of a paddle in Lake Taupo and a run along the foreshore, while the older triathletes aged from 7 years upwards can compete as individuals or as part of a team.
While the emphasis is on fun and participation, there is an elite timed section for the serious competitors aged up to 15 years.
The event is now in its 14th year and is a popular addition to the Taupo events calendar, with out-of-town competitors and Taupo students competing.
It is organised and run by Waipahihi School's Ironkidz committee, with the support of major sponsors Wairakei Estate and Tuwharetoa Maori Trust Board. To register visit the website, www.ironkidz.com
