A car towing a trailer has crashed on State Highway 2 near ASB Baypark in Mount Maunganui, blocking both lanes of traffic.

A police media spokeswoman said both traffic lanes were blocked on SH2 near Baypark after a car and trailer had crashed. "Traffic is building," she said.

The spokeswoman said traffic was blocked on the northbound side heading towards Mount Maunganui.

It was unclear at this stage whether anyone was hurt, she said.

A reporter at the scene said the crash was about 500 metres east of Baypark.

He said it appeared a 4WD trailer had flipped and was now facing the opposite direction.

"Traffic is starting to build up," he said.
