The 46th running of the $100,000 Windsor Park Stud Japan New Zealand International Trophy Race had a memorable finish and an unexpected challenge for the leading runners.

Just 50 metres into the 1600metre feature race at the Bayleys International meeting at Tauranga Racecourse on Saturday, Markey Mark suddenly roared to the front of the top class Group 2 field without his jockey Samantha Collett.

A riderless horse can cause plenty of trouble but apart from a slight wobble down the back straight thankfully the horse did not cause any undue interference to the rest of the field.

The drama was of little interest to Kelly McCulloch on board All Roads who made an impressive run from the back of the field to surge home down the straight to win by a short neck from fast-finishing Scapolo with Beefeater third.

The impressive victory was the highlight of the racing career so far for five year-old gelding All Roads who a year ago had started just eight times for only one win.

Part-owner Tony Coles decided to send the horse to Ruakaka to be trained by Donna Logan and Chris Gibbs and a succession of winner's sashes has followed.

All Roads has won five races since the move with McCulloch riding him to five of those.
She says her main plan pre-race was to get him relaxed and to settle early.

"He has got the gears to pick them up like he did so I wasn't really too worried that I was back so far. He pulled himself up a bit when he hit the front but he managed to hold on.

"This is a nice race to in. It is worth 100,000," she said with a smile.

Also smiling was trainer Gibbs who was highly impressed with McCullough's perfectly judged ride.

"We always enjoy coming to Tauranga and Tauranga Racing Club has always been a great contributor to racing and putting on a lovely time for everybody," he said.

"This particular race was high on our target list for this horse. It is such a lovely race and it is has been going 46 years with the wonderful relationship with the Japan Racing Association.

"We are really happy."

Gibbs did not say too much pre-race to McCulloch as that can be counter-productive.

"I just said you know this horse so be confident you are on the horse that can win because he is spot on. I said the inside is starting to come back so if you come too wide you cannot win.

"She just sat quietly and she knew he has a burst of speed, like really good acceleration, and she rode him beautifully. He just burst through and that was the winning of the race."

The old adage that if something goes wrong you need to get back on the horse rang true for unlucky jockey Collett after she was thrown from Markey Mark.

She returned to the birdcage shaken and with some fresh grass stains on her silks but otherwise none the worse for her experience.

In true racing tradition she got straight back into her work, riding Ekarosa into fifth place in the next race.
