Luke Toomey has broken the record at the Tauranga Golf Club, shooting 58 around the par-71 course to break the record of 59.

Luke Toomey caused more than the normal stir when his score was posted inside the clubhouse at Tauranga Golf Club on Saturday.

New Zealand's number one ranked amateur, who moved to Tauranga from Hamilton three weeks ago to work daily with his coach Jay Carter, shot 58 around the par-71 course to break the record of 59 held jointly by Mark Brown, Richard Lee and Jared Pender.

Toomey, 23, played the opening nine holes in six-under 29 and the back nine in seven under 29 for his remarkable score of 58.

He started on the par-five seventh hole and finished on the par-five sixth in an unusual way of playing the course that clearly worked for him.

He eagled the par four second and tenth holes and added nine other birdies with no bogeys.

The record 58 will take some beating in the history of the club that celebrated its centenary in 2014.

It is Toomey's second score of 58 after he set an unofficial record at the Hamilton Golf Club.

"I started birdie, birdie from number seven and then made a really good up and down on the par-3 number nine," he said.

"I drove it on the 10th green and holed a 12 footer for eagle and the momentum just kept going from there really.

"Honestly it was not like I was striping it down every fairway and hitting it to within a foot on every hole.

"It was just really solid and I finally had a day when my putter got really hot so it was good."
