Today is the last day to cast a vote in the Tauranga's by-election.

Voting will close at 12pm, meaning all votes must be in a ballot box by that time to be counted.

Ballot boxes can be found at libraries in Tauranga City, Greerton, Papamoa and Mount Maunganui, as well as at the Tauranga City Council office at 91 Willow St.

There is still time to make a special vote in person at the council if you are not enrolled in Tauranga, are on the unpublished electoral roll, or do not have your voter pack.

Electoral officer Warwick Lampp said preliminary results should be announced mid-afternoon today based on an estimated 95 per cent of votes counted.

As of mid-morning yesterday, 25,343 people had voted in the byelection - about 26.5 per cent of registered voters.

Twenty candidates stood for election for the at-large seat left vacant when councillor Gail McIntosh died in January.

Slightly more people - 27,540 - have voted in the non-binding museum referendum being held alongside the byelection. Unlike the byelection, there is an online voting option for the referendum.
