Hundreds of family and friends turned out to farewell long-loved and respected teacher Jenny Griggs today.

A memorial service was held for the former Tahatai Coast School deputy principal at Tauranga's Holy Trinity at 1.30pm.

Jenny Griggs, 66, passed away while on her family's last holiday together in Cairns, Australia last week after a short battle with cancer.

She was described today as a family woman with a huge heart, welcoming home and "so much about people".

Her 47-year teaching career had a huge impact on staff, students, parents and communities of the schools where she was based, former Tahatai Coast principal Mark Beach said.
