The Maketu Kaimoana Festival 2014 was a hit.

The Maketu Kaimoana Festival 2014 was a hit.

Juicy oysters, tasty mussels and fresh fish were the order of the day in Maketu at the weekend.

The Maketu Kaimoana Festival 2014 celebrated its annual event at the seaside town on Saturday in scorching heat.

Maketu Primary School principal Sandra Hemopo, pictured, was helping to quench the thirst of punters by selling watermelons.

"It was just such a good crowd," Ms Hemopo said.

Hundreds of people perused the 20 to 30 stalls before parking up picnic style in front of the live entertainment.

"I think it's growing in popularity. A lot of people have it on their annual calendar," she said.

"I guess it comes down to the weather and it was very hot and sunny.

"We got so busy in our little stall, I actually don't know what people were lining up for the most. I guess that's a good indication of how things went."

The festival was organised by the Maketu Rotary Club and created a nice, relaxed atmosphere, Ms Hemopo said.

The school has had a stall at the festival each year for the past four to five years. The stall helps as a fundraiser for the school, whose kapa haka groups opened the festival, Ms Hemopo said.

Entertainment included Tom Sharplin and the Cadillacs and Kingi Biddle who acted as MC.
