I was rapt when I learned yesterday afternoon from senior writer Ellen Irvine that we have so far raised more than $7223.24 in food and cash for the Bay of Plenty Times Christmas Appeal 2011.

What a fantastic result for the foodbank - and we've got four more weeks to go.

I was moved after reading the story in today's paper about the birthday party for 6-year-old Zahnee Campbell, who has been through significant health battles and relied on community help to get a life-changing operation.

Her family has decided to support the appeal and request her party guests to bring food items for the foodbank instead of presents for Zahnee.

What a wonderful gesture of giving back. Zahnee and her family have earned my respect and thanks.

Compassion is a wonderful quality and it's important we show some to people less fortunate, especially at Christmas. Thank you to everyone who has donated.
