A teenager who injured her spine diving into a lap pool at Greerton Aquatic and Leisure Centre is being treated at Middlemore Hospital.
Bay Venues general manager Paul Dunphy said the girl dived into the pool at noon on Sunday, struck the bottom, and lost consciousness.
Lifeguardsrescued the injured girl from the water and administered CPR.
Emergency services arrived on site, and the teenager was conscious and alert when leaving the facility. She was flown to Auckland by a Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
“Unfortunately, they have sustained a spinal injury and our thoughts are with them and their loved ones,” Dunphy said.
“We are currently working through our incident review process.
“We are also working with all staff involved and supporting them through this process, and will stay in contact with the teenager’s caregivers throughout to offer ongoing support.”
An Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopters spokesperson said their crew was tasked to Tauranga to assist an ambulance with a female patient in her teens suffering injuries from a swimming pool accident at 1.10pm.
