UPDATE 7.56pm: The man who died in a collision with a mobile library bus this morning is now understood to be a 19-year-old boy from Tauranga.

Earlier information from police said the victim was a 20-year-old man however Western Bay of Plenty head of road policing Senior Sergeant Ian Campion told the Bay of Plenty Times tonight police now understand he was 19 years old.

The car that the teen was a passenger in had been travelling toward Welcome Bay when it appeared to have spun out of control before colliding with the bus, travelling in the opposite direction.

The section of Welcome Bay Rd between Kairua Rd and Water Lane was re-opened about 2.15pm, following the crash which claimed the life of a 20-year-old man travelling passenger in a red Holden Astra.

The car had been travelling toward Welcome Bay when it appeared to have spun out of control before colliding with the bus, travelling in the opposite direction.

The crash happened at 9.05am, on a sharp bend outside the Faith Bible Church.

EARLIER:

Tauranga City Council's boss has offered condolences to the family and friends of a man killed in a crash involving the council's mobile library bus this morning.

Council chief executive Garry Poole said council staff and elected members were shocked and saddened on hearing the news of the fatal crash involving a car and the mobile library bus at Welcome Bay.

A 20-year-old man who had been travelling as a passenger in the Holden Red Astra died at the scene.

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of those involved,'' Mr Poole said.

Council staff have been on site this morning to offer any assistance required and would continue to do so, he said.

The man was one of two travelling in the car on Welcome Bay Rd when it crashed outside Faith Bible College.

The driver of the car, also 20, was also hurt and taken to Tauranga Hospital with minor injuries. The bus driver is understood to not be physically hurt.

The crash happened at 9.05am. The bus had been travelling toward Papamoa. The car had been travelling toward Welcome Bay when it spun and collided with the bus.

Police have appealed to anyone who might have seen the crash or saw the red Holden prior to the crash to contact Peter Simmons at the Tauranga Police Station on 07 577 4300.

Police closed the stretch of road between Water Lane and Kairua Rd as Serious Crash Unit investigators examine the scene.

Western Bay of Plenty head of road policing Senior Sergeant Ian Campion asked people to avoid the area if possible but diversions were in place.

It was likely the road would be closed for some time, he said.

The car's two occupants were both trapped in the vehicle for a period of time.

The male bus driver was unhurt.
