The Te Puke community was surprised yesterday morning at the news Tony Ryall, the Minister of Health, was going to retire in the next elections.

The Bay of Plenty MP has been actively involved in the town.

Te Puke Jewellers' owner Rod Pearce said he was surprised and saddened to see Mr Ryall go.

"He has been a great supporter of our community.

"When the Te Puke High School burnt down he was there first thing in the morning to show his support."

Mr Pearce said when he re-opened his store in 2011 Mr Ryall was there in person to help him.

"He was here for two or three hours and had to head straight back to Wellington. They were busy in Parliament at the time, but he made the effort to come. He's always shown great support for the local community. He's a really nice guy, is passionate and really cares which is really important."

Gift-Rapt owner and district councillor Karyl Gunn said Mr Ryall had always been approachable and valuable to the Te Puke community.

"He was always willing to participate and has been great at always making himself available. He is always fighting for the underdog and above."
