Tauranga's Georgia Lines to perform at free Christmas concert

Tauranga singing sensation Georgia Lines will return to her roots to help Bethlehem get into the festive spirit at this year's A Night Before Christmas.

The former Bethlehem College student will perform at the free community concert at the college's sports field on December 22.

Lines first appeared in A Night Before Christmas in 2013 before going on to win the national title of Smokefree Rock Quest Solo/Duo and Woman Musicianship award the following year.

Since then she has played alongside artists such as Hollie Smith, Dave Dobbyn, Avalanche City, Tiki Taane and many more. She has also been involved in writing for Curate Music which won a Tui Award in both 2014 and 2017 for best gospel album.

"Georgia is just one of a bunch of young up-and-coming talents that we have at this year's concert," event director Luisa Schroder said.

"It is great to have her return to the stage as she goes from strength to strength with her performance abilities and musicianship."

Presented by Bethlehem Baptist Church, the concert is celebrating its 22nd year and features a festive variety of live music, dance, carols, food stalls and a massive fireworks display.

Between 15,000 and 20,000 people are expected to pack out the college's sports field to celebrate the traditions of Christmas in New Zealand's very own Bethlehem.

To cater for the expected crowd increase, a 40sq m LED big screen will be installed to capture all the on-stage action.

The traditional story of Christmas will also be profiled "in a creative way" to remind people of the significance of the event.

Donations will be collected for Good Neighbour Trust, known for neighbourhood projects helping families in need through their Food Rescue initiative and Community Gardens.

Last year, the community raised $5000 which went straight to the charity and its Neighbourhood Kitchen project.

"With a variety of locally and nationally recognised performers, heaps more entertainment and a handful of amazing food trucks there is sure to be something to get everyone into the festive spirit," Schroder said.

"Plus being able to pay it forward by donating proceeds to a worthy cause represents the spirit of generosity that is Christmas."

A Night Before Christmas is a free family event on December 22, at Bethlehem College's front fields. Gates open 5pm. Alcohol is not permitted.
