Tauranga residents experienced the most rain and sunshine hours during the 2013 to 2014 summer season as reported in the NIWA Seasonal Climate Summary.
263mm of rainfall was recorded, 21mm more than Auckland which was the second wettest centre.
Despite the amount of rainfall, 740 hours of sunshine were recorded which was nearly 50 hours more than the second sunniest centre, Hamilton.
Reports of a weak tornado and damaging winds that lifted roofs in Papamoa on December 29 were noted as one of the summer's extreme weather events, as well as strong winds causing a boat to be assisted to shore in Tauranga Harbour on January 21.
