About 25 Tauranga men and women turned out to honour the fallen at a ceremony to commemorate the centenary of the start of WWI.
A wreath was laid at the entrance to Tauranga Domain by Tauranga RSA president Dick Frew and WW100 Tauranga treasurer Paul Anderson.
Alby Osborne, national vice
president of the Royal New Zealand Naval Association, reminded the crowd of the sacrifice so many made during the war and encouraged them never to forget.
Commanding officer of HMNZS Ngapona Lieutenant Commander Gerard McGrath also read the words of the poem For the Fallen at the short service.
It marked the start of the WW100 commemorations which will be held in Tauranga and around the country during the next year.
