Tauranga Boys' College student Kale Adair has been counting down the days to find out if he had passed NCEA level 2 with an excellence endorsement.

Adair was one of about 9000 Bay of Plenty students who sat end-of-year external exams last year and would be logging on to the New Zealand Qualifications Authority website to find out his results today. The 17-year-old was waiting on results for classics, history, economics, mathematics and English.

He had passed NCEA Level 1 with excellence and was hoping to pass at least one paper with top marks to receive an excellence endorsement for Year 12 too.

"I think they went well. I found Level 1 exams were closer together and were earlier than last year, so we didn't have much time to study," Adair said.

"Level 2 this year was more spaced out, and I didn't have such obscure subjects, so I had more time to study."

Adair studied most days at the school library to avoid distractions.

"The biggest thing for me is to focus on one exam at a time," he said. "If you had three exams in a week you would be thinking so broadly."

It was a busy year for the teenager, who took on two extra papers last year for scholarship English and economics but was confident he studied well enough to pass.

He would get results for his scholarship exams when they were released on February 8.

Looking forward to the new year as a Year 13 student, Adair was hoping to pass NCEA Level 3 with a consecutive excellence endorsement.

Adair was hoping to study economics or law once he graduated from Tauranga Boys' College.

He had been able to study a university paper on moral philosophy at the college which he said had a partnership with the University of Waikato.

"I found it really good," he said. "Although it is not a mainstream paper, it helps in so many other areas of the school curriculum."

Authorities yesterday would not say precisely what time results will be online in case everyone tried to look at the same time.

NZ Qualifications Authority deputy chief executive Kristine Kilkelly said the results were usually released on the morning of the release day.

"We appreciate that students want to view their NCEA results as soon as possible, so we release results as soon as our system preparations and testing are completed – usually in the morning of results release day," she said.

"We also provide an extended call centre service to respond to student inquiries throughout the day."
