A Tauranga man is stable in hospital after 1.5 tonnes of steel pipes fell on him.

The TECT Rescue Helicopter was sent to a rural address in Whakamarama yesterday morning and took the man to Waikato Hospital for specialist treatment.

The 65-year-old suffered serious lower leg injuries as a result of the incident.

A Waikato District Health Board spokeswoman said the man was now stable in a ward.
