The official opening and blessing of Tauranga's nightshelter will take place on September 8.

The former youth hostel at the bottom of Elizabeth St will take in its first homeless men about a week later.

Newly appointed manager Annamarie Angus had worked in social services and non-government organisations for many years, with an in-depth knowledge of the housing crisis in Tauranga and displaced people.
