Tauranga Boys' win Super 8 clay shoot tile

Tauranga Boys' College has again reigned supreme in clay shooting by winning the Super 8 title.

The team was also second at the Hamilton Boys' High School Inter-school Shoot (ISS) and third at the North Island Championship.

The prestigious ISS was held on Friday, July 8 followed by the North Island Championship the next day.

Tauranga Boys' entered two teams for both events. Friday offered marginal weather conditions and the overall scores were low for all 42 squads and over 200 competitors present.

The TBC A team of Devin Holland, Hamish Williamson, Shaun Gwillim, Brady Anderson and captain Tom Woodd shot 277/300 possible points which was just one point behind the winners.

TBC's second team of Matt Newman, Hemi Pearce, Hunter Eagle, Thomas Box and Jon Howard placed 14th with Woodd gaining a highly respectable seventh place overall after a hotly contested shoot off.

Saturday's weather was much more favourable for shooting the North Island Championship.

TBC ended up with 279 points for the day, a score that would have won the ISS held the previous day. This respectable result placed the team third overall in the North Island.

Hamish Williamson and Brady Anderson both had outstanding days.

In a lengthy shoot off in the Single Rise event, Anderson came second and Williamson third. It was Anderson's first appearance in the A team this season with his excellent shooting earning him the 50 long run badge.

The combined team score at the North Island Championship is used to determine the Clay Target Super 8 champions.

TBC and Palmerston North Boys' High School finished first equal so a shoot off was quickly arranged to determine this year's champion.

TBC lost the coin toss and ended up shooting second, giving the boys from Palmerston North the advantage of acceptable daylight conditions.

Despite this, their efforts were no match for Tauranga Boys' who in fading daylight rose to the challenge and won the contest convincingly by seven clear points to bring home the Super 8 Trophy they last won in 2011.
