Tauranga aviation group to take off

A branch of a society started in the 19th century is being formed in the Bay of Plenty.

The arrival of an Aero Society member in Tauranga - Des Underwood - has led to plans unfold to establish a new branch in Tauranga.

The first Aero Society meeting is planned for Friday August 7 at 5.30pm at Classic Flyers, 9 Jean Batten Drive, Mt Maunganui.

The Aero Society is a focus group of aviation professionals and those with a passion for aviation to network and explore the marvels of aviation with others in New Zealand and
beyond.

The Aero Society is another name for the Royal Aeronautical Society. It started in Britain in 1886, when aviation consisted of hot-air balloons and powered flight was just an idea.

The New Zealand division was formed in 1949 with branches now operating in Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Wellington, Blenheim and Christchurch.

The formation of a Bay of Plenty branch recognises the extensive aviation activity here and its rich history.

The branch will bring another dimension to the great work of Classic Flyers in providing a wonderful aviation heritage venue in the Western Bay, Des says.

The wider work of the New Zealand division and its branches includes an annual symposium, an on-going initiative of Youth in Aviation and annual awards to recognise notable people in aviation.
