Police are treating the death of a man in Tauranga as suspicious.

The man's body was found by neighbours about 10am today at a property in Kesteven Avenue.

The property and an area of nearby Merivale Primary School was cordoned off for a scene examination by police and forensics staff.

Merivale Primary School's board of trustees said the school would be closed tomorrow and parents would need to keep their children home or make alternative arrangements.

The school will reopen on Tuesday.

Police were also speaking to people in the area and a post-mortem examination would be carried out to establish how he died.

Police wanted to hear from anyone in the area last night or this morning who may have information.

No further information about the dead man would be released until police had found and told his next of kin.
