Emergency services were called to a scrub fire believed to have been deliberately lit at a Mount Maunganui property on New Year's Eve.

A Police media spokeswoman said police were alerted to the scrub fire behind a property on Ocean Beach Road about 5.35pm.

"Initial reports were that a group of people had lit it and run away," the spokeswoman said.

Police are yet to find the the group of people they are seeking in relation to the suspected arson.
