Surf lifesavers young and old are hitting the streets and the malls and going door to door this year to fundraise for Bay surf lifesaving clubs with National Jandal Day.
For the second year, surf lifesaving clubs will sell keyrings, and this time badges as well, to raise money and awareness
for the day on December 5.
Jandal Day co-ordinator at Papamoa Surf Lifesaving Club Nichola Edwards said surf lifesavers were already getting into it.
"We're out and about in the shops, getting out there," she said.
Ms Edwards said last year the fundraising efforts exceeded expectations with the money raised _ $210,000 nationwide _ and the awareness created.
"It worked really well with the jandals ... it's just something a little bit different," she said.
She put the response down to the fact that surf lifesaving was a great community organisation and members were useful on and off the beach. For a new twist, badges would be sold for people who were unable to wear jandals to work on the day. The slogans on the badges read "My feet are too precious for public display" and "My feet are too sexy for public display".
The club is also getting into schools with the Jandal Day message offering a ride in an IRB for classes that raise the most.
Ms Edwards said all the money raised locally went back into the individual clubs in the Western Bay, which was an inspiration for members to work hard at fundraising. "It costs money to save a life, and we want to prevent [people] actually getting into the situation of actually needing to be saved," she said.
Surf lifesavers will be at Bayfair Shopping Centre and Palm Beach Plaza in Papamoa next weekend, Saturday 29 November and Sunday 30 November and on the day, December 5.
