Shalom Broughton placed second in the intermediate boys shot put, javelin and high jump events and Mount Maunganui College's intermediate girls relay team finished first.
This team included Armanii Martelli, Ella Pollock, Olivia Murry and Sophie Sandford. These competitors will now go on to compete at the Waikato Bay of Plenty Championships to be held in Hamilton this month.
North Island Secondary School Mountain Biking Championships: Over the weekend, four Mount Maunganui College students also participated in the North Island Secondary School Mountain Biking Championships.
The course in Riverhead was excellent with a few good climbs and lots of muddy areas to avoid. This required some technical skills and fitness from competitors. Kaia Dorr just missed out on a podium finish with a fourth place in the under-15 boys cross-country race and placed 13th in the supersprint. Jacob Earles was also in the under-15 category and competed in the downhill race finishing well in eighth place.
Samuel Lord was in the under-16 boys division and, in the cross-country race, the climbs separated out the fittest riders. Samuel and Connor Johnston from Rotorua fought it out from start to finish.
In Dunedin last week Samuel managed to take the win from Connor by a second. However, this week's race ended up in a sprint finish and only a split second separated Connor's first and Samuel's second.
