Mount Maunganui College student Charlotte Drabble broke the junior girls long jump record at the Bay of Plenty Secondary Schools Athletics championships.

Mount Maunganui College student Charlotte Drabble broke the junior girls long jump record at the Bay of Plenty Secondary Schools Athletics championships.

BOP Athletic Championships: Mount Maunganui College had some outstanding performances at the BOP Athletic Championships held at the Tauranga Domain on Tuesday.

Charlotte Drabble competed in the junior girls division placing first in the 100m, second in the 200m and first in the long jump with a distance of 4.96m breaking the BOP junior girls long jump record.

Jess Blewitt, Caitlin Harris and Hope Preston also competed in the junior girls division with Jess finishing second in the javelin, Caitlin second in the 300m and Hope third in the 800m.

Other outstanding performances for the day were Steven Whyte second senior boys 1500m, Caitlyn Lyttle first senior girls javelin and Olivia Collier second senior girls triple jump.

In the intermediate girls division, Ashlee Ennis placed second in javelin. Ella Pollock was first in both the discus and shot put events. Sophie Sandford first in the 200m and second in the 400m. Olivia Murry was first in the 400m and Toni Power placed third in the 800m race.

Shalom Broughton placed second in the intermediate boys shot put, javelin and high jump events and Mount Maunganui College's intermediate girls relay team finished first.

This team included Armanii Martelli, Ella Pollock, Olivia Murry and Sophie Sandford. These competitors will now go on to compete at the Waikato Bay of Plenty Championships to be held in Hamilton this month.

North Island Secondary School Mountain Biking Championships: Over the weekend, four Mount Maunganui College students also participated in the North Island Secondary School Mountain Biking Championships.

The course in Riverhead was excellent with a few good climbs and lots of muddy areas to avoid. This required some technical skills and fitness from competitors. Kaia Dorr just missed out on a podium finish with a fourth place in the under-15 boys cross-country race and placed 13th in the supersprint. Jacob Earles was also in the under-15 category and competed in the downhill race finishing well in eighth place.

Samuel Lord was in the under-16 boys division and, in the cross-country race, the climbs separated out the fittest riders. Samuel and Connor Johnston from Rotorua fought it out from start to finish.

In Dunedin last week Samuel managed to take the win from Connor by a second. However, this week's race ended up in a sprint finish and only a split second separated Connor's first and Samuel's second.
