State Highway 2 between Waihī and Paeroa has reopened after a stock truck crashed in the Karangahake Gorge this morning.

New Zealand Transport Agency said on their Twitter page this afternoon the road would remain closed until this evening because of "the complex nature of the vehicle recovery process."

"Please avoid travel in this area or be prepared for a long detour," the tweet said.

Between 10 and 15 cows were in the river and on the road after a stock truck veered off the highway this morning, a Fire and Emergency spokeswoman said.

Emergency services were called to the crash on State Highway 2 at 9.23am.
