Last week I was privileged to turn the first sod on the construction of the $45 million Maungatapu underpass. The project will see State highway and local traffic separated, which will reduce congestion and improve safety for all road users. The underpass will also make it easier to walk andbike around this area, with new paths and a cycling and walking bridge included as part of the project.
The NZ Transport Agency is holding information sessions this Friday afternoon from 2pm to 6pm and Saturday from 8:30am to midday at the Baden Powell Scout Hall, 39 Welcome Bay Road. If you are interested, you can go along and learn more about what will be happening at the site over the next three years.
It really is a very busy time in Tauranga for roading projects, with the Tauranga Eastern Link recently opened and the upcoming $102 million Baypark to Bayfair upgrade project scheduled to begin next year. These projects are essential to ensure that people and freight can continue to move around our city efficiently and effectively as we continue to grow.
It was great news to hear that Jetstar will introduce four new regional routes from December. Since the introduction of Jetstar to the domestic aviation market the competition has meant consumers have had access to lower fares and more choice. While Tauranga didn't make the cut this time, my discussions with Jetstar have been positive and they have indicated that they will be looking to add more regional routes in the future.
