Tauranga City Council will spend $60,000 this year to install shade sails in the popular downtown waterfront area.
The area features the new tidal stairs, children's playground and bronze Hairy Maclary statues.
"It's to stop people getting bronzed," quipped Mayor Greg Brownless.
