Updated: State Highway 2 has reopened, although there are still delays from the backlog of traffic.

Bay of Plenty Police advise drivers to be cautious in the area as power crews are still working on downed lines caused by a crash.

Power is out to more than 200 homes in the area and Powerco estimated it would be restored by 8pm.

A police northern communications spokeswoman said State Highway 29 had reopened.

Earlier: State Highways 2 and 29 are both blocked causing major traffic delays.

State Highway 2 is blocked after a car crashed into a power pole bringing power lines down across the road. Traffic is backed up beyond the western end of Apata Station Rd.

A truck has broken down in the westbound lane of State Highway 29 about 400m east of Tuakopai Stream bridge.

The weather activated speed signs advising motorists the speed limit has been lowered to 50km/h.

Police Northern Communications Centre shift commander Inspector Chris Tate said a car crashed into a power pole on State Highway 2 near Morton Rd.

The crash had cause power lines to come down across the road.

"Diversions are quite hard to put in there," he said. "There will be considerable delays."

One person had been treated for minor injuries.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area while emergency services work to clear the road.
