5.07pm: State Highway 29 over the Kaimai Range is now open to traffic after a serious crash about 3pm.

3.45pm: A van driver is in a serious condition after their van collided with a truck on the Kaimai Range.

The person was cut from the van by fire fighters after the crash.

Police say the Kaimai Range is "completely blocked" with diversions in place at SH29 and Cambridge Rd on the Tauranga side and SH29 and Raparapa Rd on the Matamata side.

Witnesses to the crash said a van and truck had crashed and the van had spun around on the road.

Motorist Jeremy Parslow was about four cars behind the crash when it happened.

"[It appears] the van was coming up the Kaimais and it had a head on with a truck and it's spun around. The front of it's completely crushed."

The van appeared to be heading up the hill towards Matamata when the crash happened near the summit, he said.
