BREAKING: Police provide an update on Tom Phillips case following incident this morning. Video / NZ Herald

One person has died in a crash near Whangamatā on the Coromandel Peninsula.

Police were called to the single-vehicle crash on Waihi-Whangamata Rd State Highway 25 about 11.40am.

The sole occupant died at the scene, police said.

The road is closed with diversions in place while the Serious Crash Unit examines the scene.
