Five people have been transported to hospital following a serious crash on State Highway 2, near Tauranga Road in Waihī.

One person is in a critical condition, one is in a serious condition and three others are moderately injured, a Hato Hone St John spokesperson said.

The crash was reported shortly after 5.30pm.

Hato Hone St John sent five ambulances, two rapid response vehicles and two helicopters. Two operations managers also attended.

Two patients were flown to Waikato Hospital and three others taken via ambulance to Tauranga Hospital.

Police said they received a report of the accident about 5.40pm.

The Serious Crash Unit has been advised.

SH2 is blocked and diversions are in place at the intersections of SH2, Trig Rd South and Waihī Beach Rd.

Motorists are advised by NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi to take the alternative route.

Northbound traffic: Turn left on to Old Tauranga Rd, right on to Frankton Rd, continue on to Victoria St, left on to Kenny St, before rejoining SH2.

Southbound traffic: As per above in reverse. This route is not useable for HPMVs (high productivity motor vehicles)/vehicles over 44 tonnes.
