Power has been restored to 731 households in Katikati this afternoon, after the second outage in two days.

Powerco blamed an underground cable fault for a major outage that saw 789 customers lose power just after 9am yesterday.

Power was restored by evening, but about 12.30pm today Powerco disconnected about 731 of those customers again to allow for repairs.

The outage let crews safely repair the damaged cable believed to have caused yesterday's outage.

After the initial outage yesterday, 58 customers had their power restored within an hour but extra field crews were sent to the area to find the fault, which initially proved hard to find.

Another 468 customers had their power restored later in the day.

The remaining 263 customers in Katikati had been restored by generator as investigations continued into the major outage.
