Scooter rider killed in Totara St crash named by police

A scooter rider was killed in a collision with a truck in Mount Maunganui on the morning of April 7.

Police say the man killed in a crash on Totara St on Saturday morning was 74-year-old Kevin William Akroyd of Mount Maunganui.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the incident and police extended their sympathies to the man's family.

Akroyd died at the scene after a collision between his scooter and a truck.

Western Bay of Plenty acting head of road policing Sergeant Wayne Hunter said the scooter riding in the cycle lane on Totara St when the truck turned right into the accessway of a Seeka cool store property near Waimarie St.

Hunter said the incident had been captured on CCTV, which had been reviewed by officers.

The truck had been carrying kiwifruit and its driver has been offered victim support.
