A Mount Maunganui school principal has sent out a warning message to parents following an abduction attempt of a 12-year-old girl last week.
The letter to parents and caregivers was sent out this morning from Mount Maunganui Intermediate principal Lisa Morresey.
In the letter, Mrs Morresey reminded parents to revisitand discuss strategies for children to keep safe.
On Friday, police received a call about a 12-year-old girl who was grabbed by a man while walking in Bain St, Mount Maunganui. She escaped but police spent several hours searching the area for the man, who was described as Maori, in his 50s, and his vehicle was said to be a light, white truck with red and black signwriting on each side.
Mrs Morresey said the school was 'very proud' of the way the student handled the situation and police praised the girl and local schools for implementing programmes such as Keeping Ourselves Safe and Girls Self Defence.
Police were still following enquiries this morning.
