Nineteen-year-old Megan Carey finds learning new things challenging but says she is eager to "do everything that other young people are able to", including
tertiary education.
Miss Carey, who has Down Syndrome, is one of 23 Western Bay of Plenty students with significant disabilities to this week receive a Dillon Scholarship
from the BayTrust.
In her third week of a two year Certificate in Work Skills at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, Miss Carey says she is enjoying the course.
She plans to put her $2000 scholarship towards a new laptop which will help with her studies and improve her computer skills.
The scholarship will also help with travel costs.
Miss Carey said the Certificate in Work Skills would help her to become more independent and will give her the skills to find a good job.
