With a missed conversion and a successful penalty kick from Tauranga Sports, the score sat at 15-14 to the boys in blue and yellow.
Seven minutes into the second half Tauranga Sports were a player down after a yellow card and Whakarewarewa scored another try in the 18th minute.
It was try for try throughout the second half as Tauranga Sports flanker Beau Williams got the ball over the try line in the 67th minute.
Whakarewarewa scored their final try after 71 minutes with Tauranga Sports second five Tyrone Keith answering back with a try two minutes later.
It looked as if the home side had done enough to win the game with a score of 29-28, until a penalty kick from halfway saw Whakarewarewa first five Ryubyn Vaipo secure the win for the visiting team.
Vaipo showed consistency throughout the match, successfully converting every try and nailing the penalty after the match went into extra time.
Despite the loss, Tauranga Sports will go forward into the semifinals next week as they sit higher on the leaderboard and Whakarewarewa's season looks to be over.
Whakarewarewa coach Boxer Smith said he was proud of his team.
"They've worked hard as a collective this group and I'm just super proud," he said.
Smith said the dramatic penalty kick finish was a full team effort as the forwards did well to lay the platform and the backs tried to finish off where they could.
"Our set piece was strong and we probably won the collision area, the contact zone. It was a good game between two good sides."
Tauranga Sports coach Euan Mackintosh said the positive of the game was the side only needed to gain one point to be guaranteed a spot in the semifinals, and they gained two.
"When we play well we play really well but when we drop off and make stupid mistakes we kill a lot of momentum.
"Obviously nobody likes losing so we need to have a look at what causing us problems still and build on it next week," Mackintosh said.
He said Whakarewarewa did exactly what he thought they would do and credited the side for claiming the win.
"They came out and they threw it to us. They took their opportunities and they played with their hearts on their sleeves which is what we expected."
The final standings for the round robin will be confirmed by the Bay of Plenty Union on Monday.
