Rugby: Leaders grab full points

Tauranga Sports, Te Puke Sports and Greerton Marist continue to lead the Bayfair Development competition with all three Western Bay contenders taking maximum points from their first four games.

On Saturday Greerton Marist went on the attack in the second spell against Waikite to notch a big 58-22 victory. The Rotorua visitors were right in the match at the halfway break with Greerton leading 19-17.

Greerton captain Jake Ryan said they unloaded their full bench of players in the second spell to be rewarded with a further 39 points.

Tauranga Sports Development have posted a massive 328 points in the opening four games. On Saturday they added 91 unanswered points against Whakarewarewa in a try fest in the curtain-raiser at the Tauranga Domain.

Te Puke Sports sit in a three-way tie at the top of the standings after they beat Te Puna 32-0 at the Murray Salt Stadium in Te Puke. Mount Maunganui clawed their way back into title contention with an easy 53-6 win over Rotoiti, with Rangataua also putting points on the board after repelling Paroa 34-24 in a hard-fought battle.

Judea and Rangiuru had a genuine wet weather battle at Maharaia Winiata Park before Judea emerged with a narrow 18-16 victory in the Baywide Division One title race. Judea led 15-8 at half time, before the visitors came back to lead by one as the clock ticked down. Judea snatched the match when they kicked a penalty goal on full time in front of their ecstatic supporters.

Arataki are right back in to title contention, beating Te Teko 17-8 at Grenada Park, with Katikati losing 17-10 to Marist St Michaels.

Baywide Division One: Judea 18 Rangiuru 16, Marist St Michaels 17 Katikati 10, Arataki 17 Te Teko 8.
