The 2016 Baywide competition was launched in Mount Maunganui last night with all Baywide men's and women's clubs represented.

"We are looking forward to this year's Baywide club rugby competition," Bay of Plenty Rugby Union chief executive Mike Rogers said. "This year's competition will create great interest with both the men's and women's competitions shaping up to deliver a number of exciting games and great rugby that the community can get in behind and enjoy."

Bay of Plenty women's development manager Hayley Kerrison said it was great to see the continued growth of women's rugby in the Bay of Plenty, with a new Rangiuru team in this year's competition which begins on May 8.

Bay of Plenty Rugby Referees chairman David Hodgson is just as excited as the players.

"We've had some really exciting things happen over the off season. Some solid planning in the back office, coupled with some exciting recruitment and access for our premier referees to the new high performance sports training centre has created a real buzz amongst the team," he said.

The 2016 premier referees panel includes professional referees Glen Jackson, Nick Briant, Shane McDermott and Brett Johnson, last year's panel members Mate Samuels, George van den Anker, Jamie Bell and Mark Hollinshead plus new additions in Ryan Waite, Jackson Reuben and Aucklander Sam Fellows.

This year's Baywide club rugby competition will be supported by Gilbert.
