Royal Birthday: Maketu boy shares day with princess

A first-time Bay mum will be keeping an eye on the progress of the new British princess who was born the same day as her baby boy.

Kirsty Levien, 20, gave birth to her first child, Canaan Ashe-Nicholas, about 6.45am on Saturday. He weighed a healthy 3.285kg.

"Everyone was telling me we were going to have them [our babies] at the same time. I had him on my due date," she said.

Tauranga Hospital nurses were excited her baby was born the same day as the new princess, she said.

"A lot of people from the hospital came in. The ladies made booties for him."

While the Duchess of Cambridge gave birth less than three hours after going to hospital, Miss Levien was in labour for much longer.

The Maketu mum went in to hospital on Thursday night and went into labour on Friday night just before she was due to be induced. Canaan was born nine hours later.

"I just want to know how she got out [of hospital] so quickly.

"She looks way better than I looked [when she left hospital]."

Miss Levien and her son went home yesterday afternoon. While she was not a huge follower of the royal family, Miss Levien would be paying more attention to the progress of the fourth in line to the throne. It would be interesting to compare the growth of the two children, she said.

The British Royal Mint has produced 2015 silver pennies for babies born on the same day as the princess. The baby's name had not been announced when this edition went to press.
