Road closed on State Highway 2 in Paeroa. Photo / File

State Highway 2 in Paeroa has been closed due to an incident on Station Rd.

New Zealand Transport Agency shared the road closure on Twitter and said the road is closed between Railway St and William St.

A detour is in place but motorists should be prepared for a delay in their journey.

The incident began at 7.37am but will be closed until further notice.

A police spokeswoman confirmed the road closure was in relation to a gas leak that Fire and Emergency were dealing with believed to be at Caltex petrol station.

She said Fire and Emergency asked the police to attend for assistance with traffic management after the incident happened at 7.20am.
