A large truck and trailer and a ute have collided in the Eastern Bay of Plenty near Ōpōtiki and a section of State Highway 2 is closed.

A police spokeswoman said police were called at 9am to Waiotahi Beach Rd near Pohutakawa Dr.

The road will be closed for some time as heavy haulage is required to move the truck, she said.

A St John spokeswoman said three people have been taken to Whakatāne Hospital with moderate injuries.

Earlier a rescue helicopter had been requested but has since been stood down.
