Next year America goes to the polls to choose a new president - the 45th person to take up that exalted position.

I say person because the previous 44 have all been men but the current frontrunner for the Democrats is former First Lady Hillary Clinton.

If Clinton is selected and succeeds in the battle for the White House she will make history by not only being the first female president, but also the first wife of a former president to take over the country. Her hubby being Bill Clinton, the 42nd prez, regarded as one of the best US leaders, despite his indiscretions.

Hillary Clinton is an exceptional woman who, while not always universally popular, has a lifetime in politics to draw upon.

Her Republican opponent has yet to be chosen and it is fair to say the world watches with bated breath to see who gets the job.

I would suggest there is only one Republican hopeful the world is talking about at the moment and that is Donald Trump.

Trump is a very rich man, reality TV host and the fastest mouth in the West.

He has made fortunes, lost fortunes and is famed for a hairstyle that looks as if it has its own life.

Trump is over-confident, controversial and when criticised reacts as many immature people do by going on the attack in outrageous ways.

I regard him as the Kim Jong-Un of US politics.

Like the North Korean leader he doesn't tolerate being disagreed with but instead of putting them in a field and firing mortars at them, Trump goes into attack-dog mode.

And he doesn't seem to know how far to go before it goes from spirited defence to straight out outrageous.

During his campaign for the Republican nomination - and remember his rivals are in the same party - Trump has already insulted just about everyone and everything.

Women, US prisoners of war, women, the disabled, women, Mexicans and women.

Here are some of his memorable quotes:

About Huffington Post founder: "Arianna Huffington is unattractive, both inside and out. I fully understand why her former husband left her for a man - he made a good decision."

"You know, it really doesn't matter what the media write as long as you've got a young, and beautiful, piece of ass."

"When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending the best. They're not sending you, they're sending people that have lots of problems and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bring crime. They're rapists... And some, I assume, are good people."

"It's freezing and snowing in New York - we need global warming!"

"I have never seen a thin person drinking Diet Coke."

To a lawyer who wanted to take a break from a case to pump breast milk: "You're disgusting."

"My IQ is one of the highest - and you all know it! Please don't feel so stupid or insecure; it's not your fault."

Trump showed the world the sort of person he was when he sank the boots into fellow Republican John McCain who had earlier criticised him. McCain was a US pilot who was shot down over North Vietnam and was held prisoner for five-and-a-half years enduring torture at the hands of his captors.

Our Donald said of this US icon: "He's not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured."

To set the record straight Trump had his military service deferred four times so he could study. He never went to Vietnam.

Now he is embroiled in another controversy over a claim that he crudely mocked a disabled reporter who dared to ask a question during a campaign rally.

He insists he did not insult the reporter and wants an apology for the accusation.

But I get the cold shakes when I think a man who acts like he does on the public stage could have his finger poised over nuclear triggers.

The last Republican president to do so was the ever-quotable George Dubya Bush whose legacy includes an invasion of Iraq that has led to the complete meltdown of stability in the Middle East and his mangling of the English language.

And who can forget his astounding assertion that "the French have no word for 'entrepreneur'."

Oh mon dieu.

I think maybe the Republicans need to change the water they are drinking if Bush junior and Trump are the best they can serve up to fight the Democrats.

Now don't think I am 100 per cent against the Trump. He has said one thing that made me laugh.

When asked what his secret service code name would be if he became president he said: "Humble."
