Rescue effort under way to retrieve stranded jetskier near Ōmokoroa, Western Bay of Plenty

A rescue effort is under way to retrieve a jetskier stranded on a sandbar near Ōmokoroa this afternoon.

A Tauranga Coastguard spokeswoman understood the jetskier had launched from
Ōmokoroa.

It appeared he had run into the sandbar in an estuary and become stuck.

He was able to stand on the sandbar but the jetski was sinking. He called a friend who called the police for help.

She said the Coastguard had put out an all-stations call to anyone in the area to help the man.

The Coastguard was co-ordinating with the police and harbourmaster to arrange a rescue.

It was an outgoing tide and the man was understood not to be in any immediate danger.
