Ocean has been on the waiting list for months before a space could become available this winter.
"Timing is crucial," Kristen said.
"An essential part of her treatment is the post-surgery at a therapy centre with US specialist Mike Pool.
"He is coming to New Zealand in September and that would be the perfect opportunity to do the treatment here, after her surgery in July.
"Also, it is recommended to do the surgery between two and four years old so the timing pressure is on."
After organising multiples raffles, a group of local women created The Ocean Project to help Kristen to fundraise.
The first fundraising event for Ocean is on Sunday, March 4 at Gilmour Reserve.
The Gilmour Lake fair is a family fun day in a relaxed atmosphere with pony rides and a teddy bears' picnic.
There will be live music all day from 10am to 7pm, and dancers will also be performing with several market stalls set up.
Visitors can enter in the bike parade around the reserve for $2 .
Waihi Baptist church has games organised along with a sausage sizzle.
A market will bring more food, drink and art and craft at the lake.
Fairies will walk among stilt walkers, with acrobats and jugglers and one of the schools will open the event with a kapa haka.
"It has been a real team effort. I have been really lucky to have the team of girls helping me. Meshell [Rickard] has been amazing taking care of all the details of the day. The venue is perfect and I hope it might inspire the town to use it more often.
"What started with a teddy bears' picnic became a larger all-day event. We have had plenty of registrations and this is fantastic to see," she said.
The day will also mark New Zealand's Children's Day.
Kristen was also preparing to go to the Splore Festival on February 23-25 to raise more funds selling handmade jewellery and crafts.
