The high-rise northern end of Mount Maunganui should be turned into a special precinct to make it a more vibrant tourist destination, a resident says.
Max Lewis' vision includes setting up a committee of Mount business interests and other "competent" people to manage and expand tourist and visitor growth.
Hisidea to establish a visitor and tourism precinct from Rata St to Adams Ave was outlined to last night's meeting of council's community development committee.
"The council should capitalise on the Mount's already world-famous reputation and maximise its tourist potential," he said in his submission.
Mr Lewis told the Bay of Plenty Times that the Mount did not present a strong enough image. "There's no wow factor."
