More than 800 Tauranga houses have had their power restored after a car struck a power pole in the Bellevue area.

The crash happened just after midnight on the corner of Oriana Cres and Sherwood St in Bellevue.

A Powerco spokeswoman said power was cut to 819 customers in the Bellevue area of Tauranga early this morning.

She said the pole was replaced with power restored to most customers by 7.10am.

Powerco field crews were still working to restore power to about a dozen properties affected by the initial outage. The estimated time of restoration was 4pm.

A police spokeswoman said the road was blocked for a time while the power lines were down.

She said the sole occupant was uninjured and police were speaking with them.

Fire crews, ambulance and police were all at the scene of the crash.
