Thousands of properties in Matua and another 37 in Whakamarama without power. Photo/File

More than 4000 properties in Matua are without power and another 37 in Whakamarama also lost power this afternoon.

According to Powerco's website, power was cut to 4059 properties in Matua from 5.08pm and was estimated to be restored at 6.08pm.

Another 37 properties lost power in Whakamarama just before 4pm and Powerco expected the supply would not be restored until 9.57 pm.

The exact cause of the outage is not known.
