Power has been cut to parts of Papamoa East tonight after a car smashed into a power pole.

Police Sergeant Craig Madden said the 27-year-old driver, the sole occupant of the car, lost control of his vehicle as he neared the Parton Rd roundabout about 9pm.

The car travelled through the roundabout and then took down a lamp post before continuing and levelling a nearby power pole.

"Power will be out for several hours but will be restored early tomorrow morning," Madden said.

The driver of the car was taken to Tauranga Hospital with moderate injuries.

Madden said speed and alcohol appeared to have been factors in the crash.

The road is closed and diversions are in place.
